KONZ. Detroit. Grosse Ile. Bob writes: “A little history of KONZ: “Grosse Ile is located at the point where the Detroit River empties into Lake Erie’s north west corner. The airport is tucked under the Detroit Metro Airport’s Bravo Airspace, and just west (yes west) of Canada. From 1927 to 1969 the airport was known as NASGI or Naval Air Station Grosse Ile. Many of the WWII navy pilot trained here, including George Herbert Walker Bush and Bob Barker. Amelia Earhart flew in to Grosse Ile in 1935 to interview a navigator. KDRM Drummond Island Airport. Jim says: “We had a great experience at KDRM. We visited during the COVID-19 period. We arrived midday, camped overnight at the airport and departed the next afternoon. Jim Bailey was very helpful. He provided a car and there are basic bathrooms (toilet, sink cold water). There are nice hiking trails to enjoy and several restaurants. 100LL is available as is MOGAS but you need a way to get it to your aircraft.
